Cryotherapy Service
Safe and effective removal of benign skin lesions
Cryotherapy (also known as cryosurgery) is a minimally invasive treatment that uses extremely low temperatures to safely remove a variety of benign skin lesions. By freezing the targeted tissue, cryotherapy destroys unwanted or abnormal cells, allowing the body's natural healing process to remove them and replace them with healthy new tissue.
Cryotherapy is a quick, effective treatment used for both medical and cosmetic skin concerns. It requires no surgical incision, involves minimal downtime, and allows most patients to return to their normal daily activities immediately after treatment.

How does it work?
Cryotherapy works by rapidly freezing the targeted tissue using a medical cryogen.
The extreme cold causes tiny ice crystals to form within the abnormal cells, damaging their structure and causing them to break down. The freezing process also temporarily interrupts the blood supply to the treated tissue, further helping to destroy the unwanted cells.
Following treatment, your body's natural inflammatory and immune response removes the damaged tissue while stimulating the normal healing process, allowing healthy skin to replace the treated area over time.

What can Cryotherapy treat?
Cryotherapy is commonly used to treat a range of benign skin lesions, including:
-
Warts (Verruca vulgaris) – commonly caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), particularly on the hands and feet.
-
Skin Tags (Acrochordons) – soft, harmless growths that are often removed for cosmetic reasons or if they become irritated.
-
Seborrhoeic Keratoses – common, non-cancerous skin growths that can be effectively removed using cryotherapy.
-
Actinic Keratoses – sun-damaged, pre-cancerous skin lesions that can be treated to destroy abnormal cells and help prevent progression.
-
Molluscum Contagiosum – a viral skin infection that causes small raised bumps and can respond well to cryotherapy.
During your consultation, we'll assess your skin concern and advise whether cryotherapy is the most suitable treatment for you.
Benefits of Cryotherapy
Cryotherapy offers several advantages over more invasive procedures, including:
-
Minimally invasive treatment with no surgical incision
-
No stitches required
-
Minimal scarring in most cases
-
Quick treatment with little disruption to daily life
-
Fast recovery time
-
Often completed in a single treatment session for many benign lesions
-
Minimal follow-up required in most cases
Recovery and Aftercare
Recovery following cryotherapy is usually simple and straightforward.
Most patients can return to their normal activities immediately after treatment.
As the treated area heals, you may experience:
-
Mild redness and swelling
-
A blister developing within the first 24 hours (this may be clear, blood-filled or darker in colour)
-
A protective scab forming over the treated area
-
The scab naturally falling away after approximately 1–2 weeks
Complete healing generally takes around 2–4 weeks, depending on the size and location of the lesion.
These reactions are a normal part of the healing process as your body removes the treated tissue and new healthy skin develops beneath.
Is Cryotherapy right for you?
