What are Wrinkle Relaxing Injections (Botulinum Toxin A)?

WRI is a formulation of botulinum toxin type A derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. The active ingredient in WRI is a protein that blocks the release of acetylcholine and relaxes muscles. When facial muscles are relaxed the skin above them tends to smooth out, giving you a less lined appearance. WRI has been used for various conditions for over 30 years in 60 countries.

What is it used for?

​

WRI used in cosmetic practice is typically injected into the facial area. These injections relax the underlying muscles, preventing the action of muscle contraction on the skin. This includes treatment of glabellar lines (the lines you get between the eyebrows), the forehead and around the eyes (crows’ feet).​

​​How long until I see the results?

 

The results of your treatment may take up to 14 days, however many people see a reduction in their lines and wrinkles 3 -5 days post-treatment.

 

What is involved?

 

You will be consulted and treated by Wendy Dudley. Wendy will advise you about what is possible in terms of treatment and answer any questions you may have.

You will be asked to fill in a short medical history and both the benefits and possible side-effects of treatment will be discussed. You will be asked to sign a consent form and will be photographed prior to being injected. The photographs will be kept in your medical records for future reference and will not be used in promotional or advertorial material without your express consent.

 

Will it hurt?

 

Treatments are carried out in a clinical environment. You will be asked to lie down comfortably whilst you are treated. The needles used in administering WRI are extremely fine so discomfort is kept to a minimum. The injections are relatively quick too, so if you do feel them they are soon over with.

How long will it last?

​

The majority of WRI treatments last for 3 – 6 months. It is worth noting that the first treatment may be evident for a shorter length of time, e.g. 3 months, but once you have been treated again, you are more likely to see the results lasting longer.

How many treatments will I need?

​

Repeat injections are needed every 3 – 6 months. Clinical trials report that people who have regular treatment over a 12 month period may only need further injections twice a year. It should also be noted that people who have these injections regularly can stave off the formation of new wrinkles.

Hyperhidrosis

WRI is currently licensed in the UK for excessive sweating.

​

​Often considered a relatively taboo personal problem, hyperhidrosis more commonly known as excessive sweating affects about 1% – 3% of the population. Those affected by the condition often find it interfering with their everyday lives which is why many opt for hyperhidrosis treatments.

​

What Is Hyperhidrosis & How Does It Affect People?

​

Any amount of sweating is the body’s natural mechanism to cool itself via your nervous system, automatically triggering your sweat glands when your body temperature rises. However when a person is afflicted with the most common form of hyperhidrosis known as “primary focal”, the nerves responsible for signalling the sweat glands become overactive, despite having no physical triggers this results in an excessive amount of sweating. Primarily affecting the palms and soles of the feet, this form of hyperhidrosis has no medical cause although it may have a hereditary component.

 

Before coming to us here at Balanced Aesthetics, some clients want advice on checking themselves for excessive sweating. Although we advise coming in to see our aesthetic practitioners a few checks can be done such as; recording how often you change your clothing and find yourself needing to wash areas of your body that do sweat profusely, finding you get infections or irritated skin as a result of the excessive perspiration or that due to the excess in sweat you notice damage done to paperwork or electronic devices.

Aftercare​

After your hyperhidrosis treatment has been completed, as with all injections you may experience slight discomfort, this and any pain from the injections should not last long. To ensure you are as comfortable as possible, we also advise that you avoid physical activity for 24 hours.

The results of the treatment tend to last between 4-8 months depending on how your body metabolises the injectable substance and from that point, another appointment will be required if excessive sweating has returned.
